Holly Traffic!
Against the backdrop of a papal visit to Atlantic City, one Tony Dallariva, owner of an end-of-boardwalk pizza joint, commits to renewing his Catholic faith. Then, almost at once, he’s tricked by his lowlife brother, Joey, into stealing the popemobile. As this fast-paced farce unfolds, the brothers’ night-time ride in the stolen vehicle becomes a phantasmagoric tour of the nutty fringes of religious belief. They get entangled in the rituals of evangelical snake handlers, New Age pagans, Satanists and Voodooists. Moreover, during their frantic drive, the Dallariva brothers discover an unintended passenger in the trunk, one whose holiness complicates this ludicrous journey along the Jersey Shore.

Last night (4/1/17) I attended the performance of Holy Traffic with two girlfriends. We thought that we were to see a comedy. We expected to laugh. This production was anything but funny. It was disrespectful to anyone who believes in God, regardless of their chosen faith. This play was obviously written by an Atheist who has no faith in anyone or anything sacred. I will never attend another production written by Paul Matby.

Holy Traffic! is a MUST SEE for anyone who is from an Italian-Catholic, South Jersey family (or anyone who just wants a good laugh!!) The way the characters “tawked” was dead on, the relationship between the brothers is hilarious and familiar. It reminded me of a conversation at a holiday gathering, “remember that time when…?” While it certainly uses tongue-in-cheek humor to hyperbolize a variety of religious beliefs, it neatly circles back to the foundation of what wouldn’t we do for family and what wouldn’t our family do for us!
