24-Hour Playwriting Festival

CSP is a volunteer-based community theatre that is open to non-traditional casting which is color conscious, disability-inclusive, and accepts actors identifying as any gender.

Audition Dates:

February 28th, 2025 at 7:00 pm.

CSP’s NEXT Playwriting Group seeks adventurous actors ready to try something a little bit different! By auditioning for the 2025 24-Hour Playwriting Festival, actors are jumping into a controlled creative chaos that will see 6 new plays written, rehearsed, and performed script-in-hand in a mere 24 hours.

Audition Requirements Actors will arrive at the theatre with a prop of their own choosing (hint: unique props or ones with a great story are great). The actor will give a 1-2 minute description of the props history, or personal importance, or how it could be worked into a story, or whatever the actor wishes to say about the prop. It can be sad, funny, whimsical, confused, but most importantly, it should be interesting and hopefully inspiring to our writers.

NOTE
: Props selected by writers will be used in the to-be-written plays, so no ming vases, loved-one’s ashes, or breakable items.  If a writer selects your prop to be included in their play-to-be written, you are automatically cast in that writer’s play, so choose your prop wisely!

ANOTHER NOTE: Actors will be performing SCRIPT-IN-HAND. It is requested that you do not try to memorize the script, rather focus on the blocking, the character, and delivering the brand new, never-before-heard dialogue.

How the Playwriting Festival Works
* Pre-selected writers and directors are teamed up before the actors arrive at auditions.
* Actors arrive and register.
* One-by-one the actors present their prop and do their 1-2 minute audition.
* Actors leave and the writers decide which prop they want in their play and what other actors they want to be featured in their to-be-written play. Directors often offer advice on cast selection. Hopefully this is accomplished with minimal bloodshed.
* Writers leave to start writing their new play with a prop and cast for inspiration.
* Rehearsal locations are determined for each Director and Cast.
* Actors are notified of the casting results and are given the starting time and location of their rehearsal.
* Scripts are emailed in to the the Festival Manager for review, printing, and distribution.
* Rehearsals begin. Playbills are created. Lighting plans are created. Stage settings are planned.
* In late afternoon,  tech rehearsals on the stage are run in succession for each play and cast.
* Dinner.  Traditionally, we have a potluck at the theatre but attendance is not required.
* Showtime!  Shows are performed SCRIPT-IN-HAND.
* After-show-after-glow party at the theatre to revel in the culmination of our collective creative efforts.
