Trouble In Mind

CSP is a volunteer-based community theatre that is open to non-traditional casting which is color conscious, disability-inclusive, and accepts actors identifying as any gender.

Chapel Street Players is pleased to announce auditions for Trouble in Mind by Alice Childress. Director, Dominic Santos, and Stage Manager, Amy Culver, look for nine talented actors to join them in telling this empowering story. Trouble in Mind takes place in 1955 during the rehearsal process of a new Broadway anti-lynching play. The play explores themes of control, racism, sexism, assimilation, and collaboration.
Performance dates: December 4, 5, 10, 11, & 12 at 8PM. December 6 & 12 at 2PM.

Sign-in will begin at 6:30PM with auditions starting promptly at 7PM. Auditions will consist of readings from the script which can be found in the link below. Auditions will be open, and the readings will be done in groups. Rehearsals will begin in late September and will be based on cast availability.
**All cast members MUST be available October 11 th for load-in and December 13 th for strike.**

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

  • WILETTA MAYER: female presenting. Black. A seasoned and passionate actor struggling with the material she is given and the director’s rehearsal methods. Strong singing ability a plus. 40-50.
  • AL MANNERS: male presenting. White. A Hollywood director now directing his first Broadway show. Let’s the trouble of his personal life interfere with his professional process. Commands the room. Late 30s-50.
  • SHELDON FORRESTER: male presenting. Black. A seasoned actor who gets along to go along. Cheerful and wants to maintain the peace. Mid 40s-60s.
  • MILLIE DAVIS: female presenting. Black. A fashionable and smart actor. Knows who she is, what she wants, and suffers no fools. 30s.
  • JOHN NEVINS: male presenting. Black. Fresh out of acting school and making his debut. Desperate to impress. Early 20s.
  • HENRY: male presenting. White. Longtime doorman of the theater. Loves his job and the people he meets along the way. Proud of where he comes from. 70s.
  • JUDY SEARS: female presenting. White. Graduate of the Yale acting school. Liberal in her views but has been afraid to express them until recently. Early 20s.
  • BILL O’WRAY: male presenting. White. A character actor who is always working but has never done a play like this. Doing his best to make nice. 30s-40s.
  • EDDIE FENTON: male presenting. White. The production stage manager. Nervous and trying to get it right. 20s.
