Synopsis
This beloved dark comedy serves up murder, mayhem, and madcap family antics with a charming twist. When theater critic Mortimer Brewster discovers his sweet old aunts are secretly poisoning lonely gentlemen, he’s thrust into a whirlwind of eccentric relatives, buried bodies, and frantic cover-ups. Packed with rapid-fire dialogue and outrageous characters, Arsenic and Old Lace is atimeless farce that blends heart and hilarity with just the right dose of madness.
Auditions are for an ensemble of 12 to 14 actors, playing 14 roles. The directors are open to flexible gender casting; all ethnicities are invited to audition. The age ranges are rough guidelines. NOTE: Due to the large number of characters, limitations may need to be placed on the number of characters an actor can read for.
- Abby Brewster (Female Presenting 50+) Darling lady who poisons elderly men
- Martha Brewster (Female Presenting 50+) Her partner in all things.
- Mortimer Brewster (Male Presenting 20+) Their nephew, a drama critic engaged to Elaine
- Teddy Brewster (Male Presenting 20+) Their nephew, who thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt
- Jonathan Brewster (Male Presenting 20+) Their nephew, a psychopath
- Elaine Harper (Female Presenting 20+) Mortimer’s fiancée
- Dr. Einstein (Male Presenting able to do German accent 20+) A plastic surgeon and Jonathan’s accomplice
- Rev. Harper (Male Presenting 50+) Elaine’s father
- Lt. Rooney (40+) A take-charge police officer
- Mr. Witherspoon (20+) Superintendent of Happy Dale Sanitarium
- Mr. Gibbs (Male Presenting 50+) The Brewster sisters’ potential boarder
- Officer O’Hara (20+) A police officer and would-be playwright
- Brophy & Klein 20+ Police officers
